Are you looking for creating your own amazing 3D models? 3D printing is becoming popular nowadays. Many people have a 3D printer at their home to create kitchenwares, toys or household items.
If you are interested in buying one, here are things you need to know before buying a 3D printer.
Types of 3D Printers
Before you decided to buy any 3D printers, get to know three main types of the printer. Each one works differently and create different objects.
3D printing is a technology of printing the 3-dimensional object from materials like plastic, metal, nylon and other materials. There are 3 types of 3D printers available in the market. But the most widely used is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM).
- Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
FDF printing works by heating a thermoplastic filament and piece it together layer by layer. Some FDM printers are designed to use at home for hobbyists, inventors, do-it-yourselfers and small business owners. So they are small and easy to use.
Additive process of Stereolithography uses an ultraviolet light beam to harden a model from a pool of photosensitive liquid. The printed objects are higher quality.
- Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
SLS and Stereolithography works in the same way. But SLS use laser and powder instead of UV light beam and liquid. A laser will melt the powder and create a model. This type of 3D printer is more expensive but it can print a metal object that other two cannot.
You Can Build Your Own Printer
For whom that do not want to buy a pre-assembled printer, build your own! There are many instruction of how to build your own 3D printer online and also printer kits are available to purchase. It can be cheaper than buying one. Try it!
Find a Reasonable Price
3D printer prices are different depend on quality of a printed work. Spending more on printer can avoid fixing cost and other following cost.
Material for printing is not coming together with the printer. So you need to buy it separately. Remember that different printer uses different material, so you need to read the instruction before buying one. There are many 3D printers and 3D scanners for sale. Check 3D printer prices before purchasing.
Which Material to Use
There are two main types of materials used in 3D printing; Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). After heating the material, it will melt and form into an object. You have to know what you want to create, then buy material and printer that suit with your work.
- Poly Lactic Acid (PLA)
If you are a beginner user, go for PLA. PLA is a plastic that made from a corn starch. It is good for creating small and simple household items. Advantage of PLA is quickly cooling which prevent model warping effect.
- Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
ABS is a petroleum-based plastic. It produces strength and flexible object like Lego bricks. It has a higher melting point than PLA which avoid deformation under high heat.
3D printing is working with heating plastic. You have to consider the print bed because it can be very hot while using it.
The printing process can create fumes, especially when using with ABS material. So have a caution before using a 3D printer.
Be careful when using 3D printer to create kitchenwares. Usually PLA and ABS is safe for making kitchenwares but some additives are added. Give a concern about FDM printer because bacteria can form around the printer. So cover it while you do not use.
